Sofia Sacco plays the complete cycle of Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87 — a work in all twenty-four keys, lasting around two and a half hours, which Shostakovich wrote after hearing the young Tatiana Nikolayeva play Bach at the 1950 Leipzig Bach festival, and modelled on Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. Filmed by Fly On The Wall at the Royal Academy of Music in a single continuous take — one piano, one fixed camera, no breaks — it was made to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, commissioned by the City Music Foundation and released alongside Sacco’s debut recording of the work for Orchid Classics.
