24 Preludes and Fugues (2024)
24 Preludes and Fugues is a full-length performance film of Shostakovich’s Op. 87, produced with pianist Sofia Sacco in partnership with City Music Foundation.
The project returned the Fly On The Wall format to its most reduced form: a single performer, a single instrument, and a minimal technical setup. Filmed as one continuous work of over two and a half hours, the production captured the complete cycle without interruption, preserving the structural and psychological continuity of the music.
The film was designed as a portrait-led study of performance, using a single stereo microphone, minimal lighting, and a fixed visual framework. The result demonstrates the ability of the format to sustain attention and artistic coherence over extended duration without recourse to traditional production methods.
The project also marked a refinement of the Fly On The Wall production system, incorporating upgraded cinema camera equipment, lenses and a compact audio unit, improving technical standards while maintaining a minimal production footprint.
Released alongside a studio recording with Orchid Classics, the film represents a minimal but fully realised application of the format.
